Prayer for Ukraine

Loving God, We pray for the people of Ukraine, for all those suffering or afraid, that you will be close to them and protect them.

We pray for world leaders, for compassion, strength and wisdom to guide their choices.

We pray for the world that in this moment of crisis, we may reach out in solidarity to our brothers and sisters in need.

May we walk in your ways so that peace and justice become a reality for the people of Ukraine and for all the world.

Bishop David’s Parish Visit – 29th & 30th January 2023

We welcomed Bishop David at the end of January for his first Parish Visitation to Sacred Heart. He celebrated all 3 of our weekend Masses and was warmly welcomed by the parishioners.

At the end of the 9am Mass he presented Shirley Smith with the Bene Merenti medal awarded to her by Pope Francis. Shirley has lived in this country for 48 years, in Leighton Buzzard. During that time she has been one of our organists in our church since her arrival, playing at weekend Masses, and most of the funerals. For the last 30 years she has also been organist at Northall Baptist Church, providing a valuable eceumenical link. She has been a member of the SVP for about 40 years, visiting people in need and especially the elderly in some of our nursing homes – a conscientious and caring person.

At the end of the 11am Mass he presented Deacon Tony with the Bene Merenti medal awarded to him by Pope Francis. Deacon Tony has lived in Leighton Buzzard for 45 years and has been very supportive of all the priests who have served the parish during his time here. He has been a member of the SVP since 1979, visiting the poor and the needy in their homes and nursing homes and taking Holy Communion to the housebound. Having been Ordained to the Permanent Diaconate in 2014, he has continued in this pastoral work of visiting and taking Communion to a number of parishioners.

Shirley and Deacon Tony are the 2nd and 3rd recipients of this award in this Parish, the first being our late Organist, Max Merron who received his award in April 2009.
